About CarInsureZA

CarInsureZA is an independent South African information service that helps drivers make better decisions about car insurance, claims and the admin around owning a car. We are not an insurer or a broker, and we do not sell policies or earn commission on cover.

Car insurance is confusing on purpose - the same car can cost wildly different premiums, and the fine print on excess, write-offs and rejected claims is where drivers get caught out. We translate that fine print into plain language, and we give away the practical templates and tools drivers actually need.

What we cover

CarInsureZA is built around three things. The first is car insurance: we profile the major South African insurers - Santam, Discovery, OUTsurance, Hippo, King Price, Budget, MiWay, Auto & General, Naked, Pineapple and more - and explain comprehensive vs third-party cover, excess, add-ons and what actually drives your premium. The second is claims and help: what to do after an accident, how excess works, write-offs, rejected claims, and the OSTI ombudsman. The third is free templates and tools: accident report forms, claim and cancellation letters, and plain-language guides to excess and how much cover you need.

How we keep it accurate

Insurer details are drawn from companies' own public materials and South African regulators such as the FSCA and the Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance (OSTI). Premiums and terms change often, so every guide carries a "last updated" date and we ask you to confirm the current quote and policy wording with the insurer before you buy. Where we describe typical premiums or excess, we say so - they are guidance, not quotes.

We deliberately flag the things that catch drivers out: excess you did not expect, cover that lapses, claims rejected for non-disclosure or an unroadworthy car, and the importance of checking that an insurer is a licensed financial services provider. We would rather a page tell you what to watch out for than push you toward a sale.

Our editorial standards

We write in plain language, we do not use scare tactics, we do not present indicative figures as firm quotes, and we link to primary sources - the FSCA register and OSTI - so you can verify what you read and act on your rights. Every car-insurance and claims page repeats a short reminder to confirm details directly with the insurer. Pages are reviewed and refreshed as products and prices change, and the date on each page reflects its most recent review.

How we fund this

CarInsureZA is free for drivers. We may show advertising to cover our costs. Advertising never changes our editorial guidance or the order in which we list insurers.

Editor, CarInsureZA

Sipho Dlamini leads editorial at CarInsureZA. He researches car insurance, claims and road law from insurers own public materials and South African regulators such as the FSCA and the Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance (OSTI), and writes in plain language for everyday drivers.

We link to primary sources where we can - the FSCA for licensed insurers and the National Financial Ombud (which now handles short-term insurance complaints, formerly OSTI) for claims complaints and your rights - so you can verify what you read.
